"The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one's own country as a foreign land."

The Old market has a huge range of traditional and modern items. Silkware, art and crafts, jewellery and clothing - and a great place to get breakfast with the locals in the morning. The best place for western clothing - Camel, Ralph Lauren and Columbia are here aplenty.
The Night market (and neighbouring noon-night market) are more specifically tourist-oriented, with a better range of higher-quality goods, perhaps, at the newer Noon-Night version.
Walk up the Alley (between the old market and Pub Street) over Sivatha, and a clutch of new shops have opened during 2010, including Smateria, Wanderlust, Spicey Green Mango, and Poetry all offer unique designs. Try the sangria at Picasso, or a pizza and a glass of wine at Samot, or relax at the Art Deli between browsing.
