Siem Reap - Battambang is possible by land transport. Many Siem Reap locals travel to Battambang for a vacation, and travellers also frequent this route. Its a relatively short journey, and is pretty easy to manage without any major hassles. Options available overland are private taxis and buses. There is also a boat which takes a very picturesque route to Battambang, but is slightly dearer. The following journeys can be made in reverse - times and prices are the same.
Private taxis cost around US$40 to Battambang, and will usually take 2-3 hours (168km). Travellers alone should considering finding others to share with to minimise costs. Sometimes you make the best travelling friends this way!
Buses are the cheapest option, and can be purchased from as little as US$3 in areas common with budget travellers. Otherwise tickets can be bought from independent travel agents, or any specific company office - these are located all over town in Siem Reap. Journey times to Siem Reap should be around 3-4 hours, and prices will usually reflect comfort and reliability, and range from US$3 - $8.
The boat to Battambang should take 5-9 hours, but is very dependent on season - it may take even longer than this at the height of the dry season. The views are very impressive, great for bird-watchers. The boat leaves at 7am, and is US$15 per person.
