Delve beyond the usual tourist trails and discover Cambodia's hidden gems - from secluded temples and Angkor Wat to the idyllic scenery of the floating villages around the Tonle Sap lake, from the lush countryside around Battambang and the unique Bamboo Train to the tragic history and chaos of the capital city of Phnom Penh. This ten-day small group journey of discovery will introduce you to a very different way of life and living.
day 1Arrive in Siem Reap where you will be met by your expert ABOUTAsia guide and transferred to your hotel. This afternoon take an orientation tour of downtown Siem Reap followed by dinner and a memorable visit to experience the spectacular performing arts of Phare: The Cambodian Circus.
day 2A single, magical day at the temples following our well researched crowd avoidance itinerary, including Ta Prohm of ‘Tomb Raider’ fame, Angkor Thom: Terrace of the Elephants, Terrace of the Leper King, Preah Palilay, Phimeanakas, Baphuon, and the Bayon with its captivating stone faces. In the evening cruise on the moat of Angkor Thom while enjoying a sunset cocktail.
day 3Take a private boat onto the Tonle Sap lake, the richest freshwater fishing ground in the world, to visit one of the authentic stilted villages (either Kompong Kleang or Kompong Phluk depending on water levels). A picnic lunch is included. In the afternoon head into the countryside to jungle-clad Beng Mealea temple which, in a much collapsed state, retains a very atmospheric feel.
day 4Motor through the darkness of pre-dawn to see the sunrise over Angkor Wat as we guide you to the best photo vantage points. Explore the temple in the hours immediately after sunrise when the temple is at its quietest. This afternoon take a journey of discovery by boat, ox-cart and on foot to visit villages little changed since the days of Jayavarman VII. End the day with a cocktail at ABOUTAsia’s country villa overlooking the paddy fields followed by dinner.
day 5See the villages, markets and rural scenery along National Highways 6 & 5 on our drive to Battambang. This afternoon explore Phnom Sampeau, a limestone hill with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside and Phnom Banan, an Angkorian ruin located on a hilltop.
day 6In the morning explore some of the local markets and the French colonial architecture around the laid back provincial town of Battambang, before a ride on the famous bamboo train. Take in the rural surroundings and emerald green rice fields, but hold on: when two bamboo trains meet the lighter one has to be dismantled and taken off the rails allowing the other to pass!
day 7Explore the villages, markets and rural scenery along National Road No 5 by private car on your journey to Phnom Penh. Your driver will stop at your request at some of the villages and towns producing traditional and modern Khmer crafts, including the famous marble work of Pursat, and the ceramics of Kompong Chhnang.
day 8Weaving through Phnom Penh’s colourful streets, explore some of our favourite hidden gems by traditional transportation method: the cyclo. In the afternoon take in the shimmering spires of the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda.
day 9This morning we endeavour to provide some insights into Cambodia’s recent tragic history under the Khmer Rouge with visits to the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng (S-21) Prison. In the evening enjoy a sunset cruise along the Mekong river and farewell dinner.
day 10Visit the (in)famous bustling Russian Market, achaotic place with a huge variety of things on sale. A private transfer will take you to the airport for your departure flight.
