Lolei Temple

Lolei - Roluos Group overview

Lolei is part of the Roluos group of

  • Angkor temples, the modern name for the temples which were part of the ancient capital city of Hariharalaya, and Lolei was the last to be constructed in 893. Started by Indravarman I, but completed by Yasovarman I, the temple was actually an island temple, symbolic of Mount Meru, and was dedicated to members of the royal family and the Hindu divinity Shiva. The format of the temple is that of four symmetrical towers, one for each of the four temple gods mentioned in the temple's stele. The temples are now of significantly varying heights due to collapse caused by the passing of time, but the two east towers are the most significant with the NE being in the best condition, and here there are some interesting decorations on view. Similarly to Preah Ko, you can see dvarapalas guarding the doors, and female guards occupy other towers also. Indra depicted riding Airavata is present, as are lions, nagas and other minor divinities.

    ABOUTAsia Head Guide says

"Revel at the remote location of this temple, yet imagine arriving by boat to this temple and crossing the moat to reach the proud quartet of towers which made the Indratataka baray once a holy reservoir."
