Bangkok - Siem Reap is a route most commonly taken by land transport. Bangkok Airways do fly, but as they have a monopoly over this route prices are rather high, and with the newly completed road from the Thai-Cambodian border to Siem Reap journey times now are both much shorter and more carefree.
Firstly, unless you have an extremely tight budget, we highly recommend not opting for any 'all-in' deals from Bangkok to Siem Reap, usually sold in areas very popular with tourists, such as the Khao San Road. Yes they are very cheap, but journey times vary enormously, as does reliability, comfort, and the amount of times you will stop and be hassled by touts who are all part of the 'scam'. There are two other much better options. Two trains leave Hualampong train station in Bangkok for Aranyaphathet, one departing very early at 5.55am and arriving at 11.55am (6 hours), and the other one departing at 13.05 and arriving at 17.35 (4.5 hours). Tickets are ONLY 3rd class, and cost 58 Baht (approx US$1.50). We recommend booking in advance. Otherwise, from Morchit bus station you can take regular government buses which run hourly and are very efficient (4 hours), and cost 210 Baht (approx US$6). From both the bus and train stations you will need to take a short trip to the border by tuk-tuk or motorbike. From here be sure to go to the main border control, avoiding any touts or illegitimate border points..
Once through the border, Visa in hand, you have several options. Whatever you do, do not join any of the 'scam' buses halfway through their journey! You can charter a private bus to Siem Reap taking approximately 6 hours (US$10). You can also take a taxi which is by far the fastest and most comfortable option (upwards of US$30). Most economical for groups, if you are a lone traveller you can usually find other people who will let you jump in their taxi. This should take between 2-3 hours. Alternatively, if you are on a very tight budget, you can squeeze onto a pick-up. Prices vary depending on your bargaining skills, and be prepared for a bumpy ride!!
