Angkor Wat temples attract over a million tourists each year bringing problems of overcrowding to many sites. The mysterious and tranquil atmosphere of these vast temple ruins is now often rather spoiled by bus-loads of visitors and the chatter of tour guides.

Many young guides qualify each year but are still taught the identical tourist routes and timings as first published by Maurice Glaize in 1944: "First you go here, then there..." The result for many visitors feels more like being channelled through the corridors of the Vatican, rather than exploring 200 square kilometers of temple-studded forest.
